Sustainable Holidays

Americans throw away 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year's holiday period than any other time of year. The extra waste amounts to 25 million tons of garbage, or about 1 million extra tons per week!  If every family wrapped just 3 presents in re-used materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields.1

Here are a few ideas for a more sustainable holiday season:

  • Shop locally. Support local vendors while also cutting down on packaging and transportation waste associated with online orders.
  • When possible, reuse gift boxes and/or bags that you may have been given previously.
  • Wrap gifts in recyclable fabric or brown kraft paper and adorn it with dried fruit and sprigs.
  • Choose recyclable gifts like cotton apparel or quality wool blankets that last longer.
  • Give gifts of time rather than goods such as concert tickets or fun outings.
  • Light up your home using eco-friendly LED lights with a timer to increase energy efficiency.
